Accidentals. Elements of verbal text such as spelling or marks of punctuation which affect primarily the text’s formal presentation (Kline 1998, 269).

accidental Any element in a text that is not substantive, that is, whose variation does not affect meaning; traditionally includes spelling, punctuation, and capitalization (Kelemen 2009, 567).
